File Manager lets you upload, edit and organise your website files in your browser, with no FTP program needed.
Opening File Manager
In cPanel, go to Files › File Manager. It opens in a new tab.
Your website's files live in the public_html folder. This is the document root for your main domain. Anything you put there is visible at https://yourdomain.co.uk/.
Common tasks
| Task | How |
|---|---|
| Upload files | Open the target folder, click Upload in the toolbar, then drag files in. Click Go Back to … when finished. |
| Upload a whole site | Compress it into a .zip on your computer, upload the zip, then right-click it and choose Extract. |
| Create a file or folder | Click + File or + Folder. |
| Edit a file | Right-click the file and choose Edit. Click Save Changes when done. |
| Rename, move or copy | Select the item and use Rename, Move or Copy in the toolbar. |
| Download a file | Select it and click Download. For folders, Compress them first and then download the zip. |
Showing hidden files (like .htaccess)
Files that start with a dot, such as .htaccess, are hidden by default. Click Settings (top right), tick Show Hidden Files (dotfiles) and click Save.
File permissions
Select a file and click Permissions to change them. The safe defaults are:
| Type | Permission |
|---|---|
| Folders | 755 |
| Files | 644 |
Sensitive config files (e.g. wp-config.php) |
600 or 640 |
777. It's a security risk, and our servers may refuse to run PHP files with those permissions.Deleting and restoring files
Deleted files go to the Trash unless you tick Skip the trash and permanently delete the files. To get something back, click View Trash, select the file and click Restore.
