How to edit a DNS or Record Print

  • 0

DNS records tell the internet where to find your website and email. You can manage them in cPanel's Zone Editor.

Important: The Zone Editor only takes effect if your domain uses our nameservers, ns1.raleway.co.uk and ns2.raleway.co.uk. If your DNS is managed elsewhere (for example, Cloudflare or your registrar), make changes there instead.

Adding a record

  1. In cPanel, go to Domains › Zone Editor.
  2. Click Manage next to your domain.
  3. Click + Add Record and choose the record type.
  4. Fill in the Name, TTL and Record (value), then click Save Record.

To change or remove an existing record, use the Edit or Delete buttons next to it.

Tip: In the Name field you can just type the start, e.g. www, and cPanel adds the rest of your domain for you. To edit the root domain itself, use yourdomain.co.uk.

Common record types

Type What it does Example
A Points a name to an IPv4 address. shop → 203.0.113.10
AAAA Points a name to an IPv6 address. shop → 2001:db8::10
CNAME Makes a name an alias of another name. help → yourbrand.helpdesk.com
MX Tells the world which server receives your email. Lower priority numbers are tried first. Priority 0 → yourdomain.co.uk
TXT Holds text, often for verification, SPF, DKIM and DMARC. google-site-verification=abc123
CAA Controls which certificate authorities can issue SSL for your domain. 0 issue "letsencrypt.org"
SRV Locates specific services (e.g. Microsoft Teams, SIP). As provided by the service

How long do changes take?

Changes are live on our nameservers immediately, but other networks may keep the old value until the TTL (time to live, in seconds) runs out. The default is 14400 (4 hours).

Tip: Planning a move? Lower the TTL to 300 (5 minutes) a day beforehand. Changes will then take effect much faster. Set it back afterwards.

Records you should leave alone

cPanel creates records such as cpanel, webmail, autodiscover, autoconfig, _cpanel-dcv-test-record and default._domainkey. These power webmail, email setup, SSL and email signing. Only change them if you know what they do, or if our support team asks you to.

Moving email to Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace?

Replace the MX records with those provided by Microsoft or Google, then set Email › Email Routing to Remote Mail Exchanger. See How to stop your emails going to spam for SPF guidance.
