phpMyAdmin is a web tool for working with your MySQL databases. You can use it to back up (export) a database, restore (import) one, or make direct changes.
Important: Changes in phpMyAdmin take effect immediately and can't be undone. Always export a backup before making changes.
Opening phpMyAdmin
In cPanel, go to Databases › phpMyAdmin. It opens in a new tab, and you're logged in automatically. Your databases are listed on the left.
Export (back up) a database
- Click the database name on the left.
- Click the Export tab.
- Leave the method as Quick and the format as SQL.
- Click Export (or Go). A
.sqlfile downloads to your computer.
Import (restore) a database
- Create an empty database first if needed (see How to create a MySQL database and user), and select it on the left.
- Click the Import tab.
- Click Choose File and select your
.sqlfile. Compressed.sql.gzand.zipfiles also work. - Click Import (or Go).
Note: The maximum upload size is shown on the Import page. If your file is bigger, compress it with gzip, or contact support and we'll import it for you.
Running an SQL query
Select the database, click the SQL tab, type or paste your query and click Go.
Example: reset a WordPress admin password
- Select your WordPress database and open the
wp_userstable. The prefix may differ, e.g.wpxy_users. - Click Edit next to your user.
- In the
user_passrow, choose MD5 from the Function menu and type a new password in the Value box. - Click Go. You can now log in with the new password. WordPress automatically upgrades it to stronger encryption.
Example: fix the site address after a move
In the SQL tab, run (changing the prefix and address as needed):
UPDATE wp_options
SET option_value = 'https://yourdomain.co.uk'
WHERE option_name IN ('siteurl', 'home');
