How to change your PHP version Print

  • 0

You can choose which version of PHP each website uses, and adjust limits such as the maximum upload size or memory limit.

Tip: Use a currently supported PHP version for better speed and security. PHP 8.2 reaches end of life at the end of 2026, so we recommend PHP 8.3 or newer. Check that your themes and plugins support the new version first, and take a backup before switching.

Change the PHP version

Your cPanel will have one of the following tools under Software.

MultiPHP Manager

  1. Go to Software › MultiPHP Manager.
  2. Tick the domain(s) you want to change.
  3. Choose the version from the PHP Version menu and click Apply.

Inherit means the domain uses the server's default version.

Select PHP Version

  1. Go to Software › Select PHP Version.
  2. Choose from the Current PHP version menu. It saves automatically, or click Set as current.
  3. Use the Extensions tab to switch PHP extensions on or off (e.g. intl, imagick).

Change PHP settings

In MultiPHP INI Editor (under Software), choose your domain in Basic Mode, adjust the values and click Apply. In Select PHP Version, use the Options tab instead.

Setting What it controls Typical value
memory_limit Maximum memory a script can use 256M or 512M
upload_max_filesize Largest single file you can upload 64M
post_max_size Largest form submission (must be at least upload_max_filesize) 64M
max_execution_time Seconds a script can run before it's stopped 60–300
max_input_vars Number of form fields accepted (large WordPress menus need more) 3000
display_errors Show PHP errors on the page Off on live sites
Note: Settings can't go above the limits of your hosting plan. If you need more, contact support.

Checking what's active

Create a file called info.php in public_html containing the line below, then visit https://yourdomain.co.uk/info.php.

<?php phpinfo();
Important: Delete info.php as soon as you've finished. It reveals details about your server that attackers could use.
