Always take a backup before making big changes, such as updating WordPress, changing theme or moving hosts. Even if your plan includes automatic backups, it's a good idea to keep your own copy.
Download a partial backup (recommended)
- In cPanel, go to Files › Backup.
- Under Partial Backups:
- Download a Home Directory Backup: all of your files, including websites and email.
- Download a MySQL Database Backup: click each database name to download it.
- Email Forwarders and Email Filters: click the domain to download them.
Keep these files somewhere safe, away from your hosting account.
Create a full account backup
- In Files › Backup, click Download a Full Account Backup.
- Set Backup Destination to Home Directory, enter your email address for a notification and click Generate Backup.
- When you get the email, go back to the Backup page and download the
backup-….tar.gzfile. - Delete the file from your account afterwards (using File Manager), as it counts towards your disk space.
Note: Full account backups are mainly for moving hosts. They can only be restored by our support team, so contact us if you need one restored.
Restore from a partial backup
On the same Backup page, under Restore:
- Restore a Home Directory Backup: upload the
.tar.gzfile. - Restore a MySQL Database: upload the
.sql.gzfile. - Restore Email Forwarders / Filters: upload the matching file.
Important: Restoring overwrites existing files or data with the version in the backup. If you're not sure, back up the current state first.
Using JetBackup (if your plan includes it)
If you see JetBackup under Files, you can restore from our automatic backups yourself:
- Open JetBackup and choose what you need, e.g. Full Backups, File Backups, Database Backups or Email Backups.
- Pick a backup date.
- Click Restore to put it back, or Download to get a copy. You can also restore individual files and folders.
Tip: Restoring a single file or database is quicker and safer than restoring your whole account.
