We recommend using a long, unique password for cPanel and changing it straight away if you think someone else might know it.
Steps
- Log in to cPanel.
- Go to Preferences › Password & Security.
- Enter your Old Password.
- Enter your New Password and type it again in New Password (Again). Or click Password Generator to create a strong one. Make sure you copy it somewhere safe, such as a password manager.
- Check the strength meter shows a strong password, then click Change your password now!
Note: Changing your cPanel password also changes the password for your main FTP login. You'll be logged out and need to log back in with the new password.
Important: Your cPanel password is not the same as your email account passwords. To change a mailbox password, go to Email › Email Accounts, click Manage next to the address and set a new password.
Tips for a strong password
- Use at least 14 characters.
- Don't reuse a password from another website.
- Use a password manager such as 1Password, Bitwarden or your browser's built-in manager.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for extra protection (see How to enable two-factor authentication in cPanel).
