Connecting your email to an IMAP client Print

  • 0

You can use your hosted email in Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, or on your iPhone or Android phone. This guide gives you the settings you need.

Finding your exact settings

  1. In cPanel, go to Email › Email Accounts.
  2. Click Connect Devices next to the address.
  3. The Mail Client Manual Settings box shows the exact server names for your account. There are also automatic setup files for Apple devices and some versions of Outlook.

Recommended settings

Setting Value
Username Your full email address, e.g. [email protected]
Password The password for that email account
Incoming server (IMAP) Server: mail.rale.uk Port 993, SSL/TLS.
Incoming server (POP3) Server: mail.rale.uk Port 995, SSL/TLS.
Outgoing server (SMTP) Server: mail.rale.uk Port 465 (SSL/TLS) or 587 (STARTTLS).
Outgoing authentication Required. Use the same username and password as incoming.
Tip: Choose IMAP rather than POP3. IMAP keeps your mail on the server, so your phone, laptop and Webmail all stay in sync.
Note: Using the server hostname from Connect Devices (rather than mail.yourdomain.co.uk) avoids security certificate warnings.

Outlook (Windows)

  1. Go to File › Add Account (in the new Outlook, go to Settings › Accounts › Add account).
  2. Enter your email address. Choose Advanced options and tick Let me set up my account manually if you see it.
  3. Choose IMAP, enter the incoming and outgoing settings above, then click Connect.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Settings › Apps › Mail › Mail Accounts (on older iOS versions, Settings › Mail › Accounts).
  2. Tap Add Account › Other › Add Mail Account.
  3. Enter your name, email address, password and a description, then tap Next.
  4. Choose IMAP and enter the hostname, username and password in both the Incoming and Outgoing sections. Tap Next, then Save.
Tip: Quicker option: open Connect Devices in Safari on your iPhone and download the iOS profile. It sets everything up for you.

Android (Gmail app)

  1. Open the Gmail app, tap your profile picture and choose Add another account › Other.
  2. Enter your email address and tap Manual setup, then choose Personal (IMAP).
  3. Enter your password, then the incoming and outgoing server settings above.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely fix
Password is rejected Use the full email address as the username, and check the mailbox password in cPanel.
Can receive but not send Make sure outgoing (SMTP) authentication is switched on and that you're using port 465 or 587, not 25. Many broadband providers block port 25.
Certificate or security warning Use the server hostname from Connect Devices as the server name.
Sent items don't appear in Webmail Make sure your app saves sent mail to the server's Sent folder (in most apps, this is under the account's mailbox behaviours or folder settings).
